Mono Chair

The Mono chair has undergone a lengthy development process, evolving from initial concepts and rough prototypes to being showcased at the Finnish design exhibition in Triennale during Milan Design Week, and ultimately entering production for WOUD.

The original concept was to mimic the flexibility of paper with wood, shaping it into a conical form. What sets this chair apart is its structural innovation. UPM Grada material allows the wood to be folded and overlapped during the molding process, creating not only a robust joint but also an intriguing pattern of woodgrain.

Its name, Mono, stems from the production method wherein all chair variations – bar, dining, and lounge – are crafted using the same mold. The dimensions of the chair are determined by the size of the raw UPM Grada material, which arrives in large sheets rather than individual veneers. Notably, the manufacturing process eschews the use of glue; instead, the sheets are pre-cut into a rough shape, heated, pressed, and then cooled down, showcasing the material's innate versatility and sustainability.
